Samira Marti

Samira Marti is a Swiss politician and economist. She has been a Member of Parliament for the Canton of Basel-Landschaft for the Social Democratic Party since 2018. In 2022, she completed her master's degree in economics at the University of Zurich. As part of her master's thesis, she examined the impact of wealth tax cuts on the rise in wealth inequality in Switzerland. Since joining the National Council, Samira Marti has been a member of the National Council's State Policy Commission. Her work focuses on economic policy issues, social and economic inequalities, and how the state can effectively counteract this development. Further, she is a specialist on Swiss migration and asylum policies. In 2020, she became vice president of the social-democratic parliamentary group. As of September 1, 2023, she will become co-president of the SP Federal Parliamentary Group together with Samuel Bendahan.

Politicians and governments in the United States and elsewhere have recently proposed or implemented wealth taxes to supplement revenue and reduce wealth inequality. In a new study, Samira Marti, Isabel Z. Martínez, and Florian Scheuer show how decreases in wealth taxes led to increases in wealth inequality in Switzerland, though they find that these decreases alone are not enough to explain the magnitude of widening disparities.
