Bart Lahcen

Bart Lahcen is an economist and guest professor at Hasselt University in Belgium, with a PhD from KU Leuven. He works as an evaluation officer at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and has previously worked in the private sector, academia, and non-governmental organizations. He is writing a book on the reliability of economic knowledge and what happens to it on the way from research to decision-making, drawing on both research and his experience of seeing the same evidence used differently across those settings.

Merger Review Needs More Uncertainty

All merger reviews come with uncertainty, but the culture among courts, consultants, and regulators is to pretend that sophisticated modeling can eliminate uncertainty, and thus any uncertainty reflects poor econometric analysis. Creating standards of uncertainty would produce more honest analysis and better competition outcomes, writes Bart Lahcen.
