Ilya Strebulaev is an international expert in venture capital, private equity, financing innovation, and strategic financial decisions. He is the David S. Lobel Professor of Private Equity and Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business (GSB), Stanford University, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. Ilya is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the founder and faculty director of the Stanford GSB Venture Capital Initiative. He has also consulted global companies and investors on the valuation of VC-backed companies, selection of PE investments and managers, and PE portfolio allocation.
Ilya’s work has been widely published in leading academic journals. He has won numerous prestigious academic awards, including the First Paper Prize of the Brattle Award (
Journal of Finance) and the Fama-DFA Prize (
Journal of Financial Economics). His research has been featured by many major media sources, including the
Harvard Business Review MIT Sloan Management Review,
Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and
Bloomberg. He has been LinkedIn Top Voice since 2023. His book
The Venture Mindset (2024) became a national bestseller in the US and was translated into more than a dozen languages.
Ilya graduated from the London Business School with a doctorate in finance. He also holds degrees from Lomonosov Moscow State University (B.Sc., economics) and the New Economic School, Moscow (M.A., economics).
