Stephan Maurer

Stephan Maurer is a Ramón y Cajal Researcher at the UPF Barcelona School of Management and an Associate in the Centre for Economic Performance's Labour Markets Programme. He is also an Associated Researcher at the Cluster of Excellence  “The Politics of Inequality“ at the University of Konstanz and affiliated with IZA@LISER. His research fields include Economic History, Labor Economics, Urban Economics, International trade, and Political Economy.

American Slaveholders Lost Their Wealth but Kept Their Political Power

In new research, Luna Bellani, Anselm Hager, and Stephan Maurer examine how the abolition of slavery after the American Civil War affected the political influence of former slaveholders. Despite the blow to their economic standing, former slaveholders maintained their electoral success, and once in office, their influence actually grew.
