Nikolaos Chatzarakis

Nikolaos Chatzarakis is an assistant professor of Political Economy in the New School for Social Research in New York. He holds a PhD in Political Economy of Growth from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (supported by HDRI funding, awarded in 2021) and a PhD in ‘Mathematical Physics’ from the Trinity College Dublin (supported by departmental scholarship, awarded in 2025). His research focuses on theoretical models of economic growth and cycles through the scope of Classical Political Economy; models of real competition both within and between sectors; and theories of value and distribution at both domestic and international level.

Nikolaos Chatzarakis reviews some of the key economic platforms of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. He argues that Mamdani’s platform is ambitious but not unrealistic, and that criticisms of it often rely on simplistic models and theory. Still, there remain areas for improvement.
